Postpartum hair loss: what new mothers should know

A few months after the baby arrives, handfuls of hair in the shower and strands all over the floor give many new mothers a shock. Postpartum hair loss is a stage many mothers go through. This guide explains in simple words what is happening and how you can look after yourself.

What is postpartum hair loss?

During pregnancy, hormonal changes keep many hairs in the growth phase, which is why many mothers feel they have extra hair while pregnant. After birth, hormones return to their usual levels and these hairs move into the resting phase together, then fall out together a few months after delivery. So the shedding looks heavy, but it is actually your body adjusting its rhythm.

Most mothers start to notice more hair loss a few months after giving birth, usually most visibly at the sides of the forehead and along the hairline. Looking after your body and scalp during this time helps more than worrying.

When to see a doctor

If hair loss goes on for a long time without easing, comes out in patches, or comes with marked tiredness, feeling cold, palpitations or low mood, see a doctor for checks such as thyroid function and anaemia. Your body changes a lot after birth, and having a doctor take a look when you have questions is a good way to look after yourself.

How to care for yourself day to day

Eat well, drink enough water

It is easy to eat anyhow when caring for a baby. Try to have protein at every meal, such as eggs, fish, chicken or tofu, plus vegetables and fruit. If you are breastfeeding, discuss your diet with your doctor or a dietitian.

Sleep when you can

Night feeds break up your sleep. When family can share the load, catch up on rest. Enough rest helps both your body and your scalp.

Wash gently and dry your scalp first

Use warm water and a gentle shampoo, and massage with your fingertips, not your nails. Dry your scalp first after washing and avoid sleeping with wet hair.

Less pulling

For now, wear fewer tight ponytails or buns, and take care when the baby grabs your hair. Use a wide-tooth comb from the ends up to reduce breakage.

Want your hair to look fuller now?

Some mothers still care about thinning at the hairline or parting some time after giving birth, especially when returning to work, going to gatherings or taking family photos. Simulation & Stimulation is a non-surgical in-centre treatment: Simulation makes thinning areas look fuller and Stimulation helps support healthy hair and scalp condition, done in one session, with no monthly visits.

We confirm suitability at the scalp assessment. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, please tell us when you book, and we will explain at the consultation.

A word for new mothers

Caring for a baby is hard enough, and hair loss does not need to add to your stress. Look after your body first and see a doctor when needed; when you want to improve the look, come and talk to us.

Is postpartum hair loss common?

Should I see a doctor about postpartum hair loss?

If the hair loss continues for a long time, comes out in patches, or comes with marked tiredness, feeling cold and similar symptoms, see a doctor to check thyroid, anaemia and other health conditions.
